Analytical Study of the Representation of Disability in Nigerian Television Programming

Media representation of persons with disabilities shapes societal attitudes and inclusion norms, yet systematic analysis of disability representation in Nigerian television programming remains a documented research gap in communication arts scholarship. This study analytically examined the representation of persons with disabilities across prime-time entertainment and drama programming on Nigerian television channels. A systematic content analysis was conducted on 480 hours of prime-time programming sampled from NTA, Channels TV, SilverBird TV, and Africa Magic Nollywood during a 12-week sample period. Each appearance of a disabled character was coded for disability type, screen time, role type (central, supporting, background), portrayal valence (positive, negative, neutral), narrative function, and interaction with non-disabled characters. Results showed that characters with visible disabilities appeared in only 4.2 percent of analysed programme hours. Among disability portrayals, physical disability dominated (61.7 percent), with mental and intellectual disabilities severely underrepresented. Disabled characters served as narrative objects of pity in 48.6 percent of portrayals and were absent from professional roles in 83.4 percent of appearances. Central protagonist roles were occupied by disabled characters in only 6.3 percent of disability-inclusive content. The study fills a critical representation research gap and provides quantified evidence of the marginalisation of disability in Nigerian television, recommending industry-level disability representation guidelines developed in partnership with disability rights organisations and the National Broadcasting Commission.
