An Empirical Study of the Effect of Newspaper Ownership on Editorial Independence in Nigeria

Media ownership concentration and its relationship to editorial independence is a critical democratic communication concern in Nigeria, where a significant proportion of newspaper titles are owned by politicians, business elites, or politically affiliated interests. This study empirically examined the relationship between newspaper ownership type and editorial independence in Nigerian national and regional newspapers. A mixed-methods design was employed, combining a systematic content analysis of editorial positions and coverage balance in 24 newspapers stratified by ownership type (political, corporate non-media, media professional, and foreign-affiliated) with structured interviews with 20 senior editors across ownership categories. Editorial independence was measured through assessment of critical coverage of newspaper owner affiliates, diversity of political perspectives in editorial content, and willingness to publish whistleblower-based investigative stories. Content analysis covered a 12-month sample of editorials and political coverage. Results showed that politically owned newspapers showed significantly lower critical coverage of owner-affiliated political parties and candidates (mean critical coverage rate 8.4 percent) compared to professional media-owned newspapers (37.2 percent). Corporate non-media owned papers showed intermediate patterns. Senior editors from politically owned titles described direct editorial interference in 60 percent of interviews, compared to 15 percent in professional media-owned organisations. The study provides empirical evidence of the systematic editorial independence deficit associated with political newspaper ownership in Nigeria, recommending beneficial ownership disclosure regulations for Nigerian media licences.
