Empirical Analysis of Translation Loss in Academic Publications of Yoruba Oral Poetry

The translation of Yoruba oral poetry from its original performed and tonal context into written English for academic audiences involves irreducible losses that have significant implications for comparative literary scholarship that relies on translated texts. This study empirically analysed the nature and extent of translation loss in eight recently published academic translations of Yoruba oral poetry, including oriki, ifa divination verse, and ijala. A comparative translation analysis methodology was applied, with bilingual research assistants evaluating each translation against the original Yoruba text on six dimensions: tonal meaning, rhythmic structure, formulaic expression, cosmological reference, praise naming conventions, and performative context cues. Each dimension was scored for adequacy on a five-point scale. Results showed that tonal meaning was adequately captured in only 21.3 percent of evaluated passages, while cosmological reference annotation was adequate in 46.7 percent. Performative context cues were the most consistently lost dimension, with adequate representation in only 14.4 percent. Rhythmic structure in English equivalents was rated as adequate in 38.9 percent. The study traced specific translation losses to identifiable decisions about annotation depth, line arrangement, and the absence of musical transcription. The findings have direct implications for comparative literary scholarship that uses translated Yoruba oral poetry without access to source material. The study recommends minimum annotation standards for academic translations of Yoruba oral poetry and proposes a translation quality review process for publications at journals and university presses publishing such work.
