Developing a Software-Defined Networking Architecture for University Campus Networks in Nigeria

Nigerian university campus networks managed through traditional distributed networking approaches suffer from configuration inconsistency, slow response to security incidents, and difficulty implementing Quality of Service policies across heterogeneous equipment from different vendors. This study developed and evaluated a software-defined networking architecture for large Nigerian university campus networks. A professional network engineering methodology was employed, using the University of Lagos multi-campus network as a reference design case. The SDN architecture replaced legacy VLAN-based network management with an OpenDaylight controller managing a network of Open vSwitch instances deployed on campus edge switches. Centralised traffic engineering policies were implemented for QoS differentiation between student streaming, administrative, voice-over-IP, and research data traffic classes. Security policy enforcement was centralised through the SDN controller's northbound API, enabling dynamic ACL updates in response to detected threats within 5 seconds, compared to the 45-minute manual process previously required. Network configuration deployment time was reduced from approximately 12 hours to under 30 minutes for a campus-wide policy update. Simulation results using the Mininet network emulator validated the architecture with 250 virtual switches and 5,000 end hosts, showing controller response times below 18 milliseconds for flow installation. The study identifies controller availability as the primary single point of failure and recommends a cluster of three OpenDaylight controller instances in active-active mode for production deployment, with formal evaluation at Obafemi Awolowo University as the next pilot institution.
