An Original Contribution to Counselling Theory: The Ubuntu-Based Relational Counselling Model for African Contexts

Existing counselling theoretical models are grounded primarily in Western individualist philosophical traditions that conceptualise the therapeutic relationship as dyadic and the client as a fundamentally autonomous individual, yet Ubuntu philosophy's foundational assertion that personhood is constituted through relationship offers a radically different basis for counselling theory that has not been systematically developed into a formal counselling model. This study developed an original Ubuntu-based relational counselling model for application in African and specifically Nigerian therapeutic contexts. A constructive theoretical methodology employing systematic philosophical analysis, African psychology scholarship review, and cross-cultural clinical practice research was adopted. Ubuntu philosophy (I am because we are) and its specific expressions in Igbo (Igwebuike), Yoruba (Iwa Pele), and Hausa (Mutunci) ethical frameworks were systematically analysed as sources for relational counselling principles. A review of 58 publications on African psychology and counselling from 2015 to 2024 identified the near-complete absence of formal Ubuntu-based counselling models in indexed literature. Qualitative research with 40 experienced Nigerian counsellors documented implicit Ubuntu-resonant practices already present in practitioners' clinical work. The original Ubuntu Relational Counselling Model proposes six core theoretical constructs: communal witness as therapeutic context, relational identity as the unit of analysis, storytelling as the primary therapeutic mode, family-community as therapeutic resource, ancestral wisdom as knowledge system, and healing as restoration of relational harmony. Each construct is operationalised with specific clinical techniques, ethical guidelines, and outcome indicators. Expert review by 22 African counselling scholars confirmed the model's theoretical originality and practical significance.
