A Study of Hausa Traditional Architecture and Its Aesthetic Principles in Kano State

Hausa traditional architecture represents one of the most distinctive built environment aesthetic traditions in West Africa, and its formal principles, spatial organisation, and decorative systems merit systematic documentation as a contribution to both architectural heritage preservation and creative arts scholarship. This study examined the aesthetic principles of Hausa traditional architecture in Kano City, Kano State, North West Nigeria. A descriptive qualitative design was adopted, combining architectural documentation surveys at twelve traditional courtyard compounds in the Kano Old City (Birni) district, structured interviews with six traditional builders (magina), four architectural heritage researchers, and three cultural historians. Documentation included measured drawings, photographic records, and ornamental pattern catalogues. Analysis focused on spatial organisation, facade ornamentation (tubali relief work), symbolic geometric motifs, and colour application conventions. Results identified a coherent aesthetic system characterised by bilateral symmetry, interlocking geometric arabesque patterns, earth-toned chromatic palettes, and inward-focusing courtyard spatial logic that balances communal gathering and domestic privacy. Geometric ornamentation was found to carry symbolic meaning related to protection, fertility, and status that is increasingly lost in contemporary interpretations. Rapid replacement of traditional earthen structures with concrete construction was identified as the most critical threat. The study concludes that Hausa architectural aesthetics constitutes a rich but endangered creative tradition. Recommendations include heritage listing of exemplary Birni architecture, master builder documentation programmes, and integration of Hausa architectural principles into design education curricula at Bayero University Kano.
