A Study of the Craft and Aesthetics of Calabar Carnival Costume Design

The Calabar Carnival, billed as Africa's largest street party, showcases some of the most elaborate costume design and production in Nigerian creative arts, and examining the craft practices, aesthetic philosophies, and production processes of its costume designers provides important insight into the intersection of creative art, cultural tourism, and competitive performance spectacle. This study investigated the craft and aesthetics of carnival costume design for the Calabar Carnival, Cross River State, South South Nigeria. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, conducting structured interviews with sixteen costume designers from six competing carnival bands and observational documentation of costume construction over a four-week pre-carnival production period. Visual analysis of completed costumes assessed construction techniques, material innovation, colour systems, narrative themes, and scale. Results showed that contemporary carnival costume design integrates feather engineering, fibre optic LED lighting, advanced structural framing, and large-format fabric printing into a spectacular mixed-media art form. Budget allocation ranged from 800,000 to 5 million naira per band, reflecting the significant commercial and reputational stakes of costume competition. Design themes were predominantly Pan-African, historical narrative, and abstract nature-inspired. Local material sourcing challenges drove international import dependency for many specialist components. The study concludes that Calabar Carnival costume design represents a world-class creative arts practice that deserves formal academic documentation and industry support. Recommendations include skills certification, local material supply chain development, and academic documentation partnerships with the University of Calabar.
