Documentation of Nok Terracotta Art Forms and Their Influence on Contemporary Nigerian Sculpture

Nok terracotta culture, dated to approximately 1500 BCE to 500 CE, represents one of the oldest known sculptural traditions in sub-Saharan Africa, and examining its influence on contemporary Nigerian sculpture provides an important bridge between ancient artistic heritage and living creative practice. This study documented selected Nok terracotta art forms through archival and museum research and examined their influence on contemporary sculptors in North Central Nigeria. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, combining archival study at the Kaduna National Museum's Nok collection, structured interviews with 12 contemporary sculptors in Abuja, Kaduna, and Jos, and visual analysis comparing Nok formal characteristics with contemporary sculptural works referencing this tradition. Formal characteristics documented from Nok materials included the distinctive triangular or oval eye apertures, cylindrical pupils, elaborate headdresses, and the fragmentary figure construction. Contemporary sculptor interviews revealed that 66.7 percent consciously referenced Nok formal vocabulary in at least some of their work, primarily through eye treatment, headdress elaboration, and terracotta medium preference. Three respondents had undertaken direct study visits to museum Nok collections for formal reference. Challenges of terracotta production at contemporary scale and the limited market for ceramic fine art were identified as practical constraints. The study concludes that Nok terracotta remains a productive aesthetic source for contemporary Nigerian sculpture and recommends enhanced museum accessibility, artist residency programmes at heritage sites, and documentation of living sculptors who work within this tradition.
