Assessment of the Challenges Facing the Nigeria Police Force in Crime Detection in Plateau State

Effective crime detection requires adequate resources, skilled personnel, and community cooperation, but the Nigeria Police Force faces systemic challenges in all these dimensions that are particularly acute in conflict-affected states like Plateau. This study assessed the challenges facing the Nigeria Police Force in crime detection in Jos North and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas, Plateau State, North Central Nigeria. A descriptive survey was employed with structured questionnaires administered to 30 police officers across four divisions and a separate community survey of 200 residents. Interview data were collected from six divisional crime detection officers. Challenges assessed covered forensic resources, personnel training, information technology, interagency cooperation, and public cooperation. Results showed that 83.3 percent of police respondents cited inadequate forensic laboratory facilities as the primary crime detection barrier. Only 23.3 percent of respondents had received any formal digital forensic training. Case file backlogs exceeding 24 months were reported by 76.7 percent of interviewed detectives. Community willingness to provide crime information was rated as low by 73.3 percent of officers, primarily attributable to fear of reprisals in ethnically sensitive communities. The study concludes that crime detection capacity in Plateau State NPF divisions is critically under-resourced. Recommendations include forensic equipment deployment, digital investigation training, witness protection mechanisms, and post-conflict trust-building initiatives between police and affected communities.
