📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Rill and gully erosion on the sandstone-derived soils of Enugu State destroys cropland, undermines rural livelihoods, and threatens downstream water quality, and a professionally designed soil conservation programme would provide the integrated physical and biological measures needed to arrest and reverse this degradation. This study designed a soil conservation programme for highly erodible areas in Isi-Uzo, Nkanu East, and Aninri LGAs of Enugu State, South East Nigeria. A professional programme design methodology was employed, drawing on erosion severity mapping using RUSLE analysis with satellite-derived cover and rainfall data, soil profile assessment at 30 field sites, structured consultations with 15 soil conservation specialists and 8 community land users, and review of benchmark erosion conservation programmes from Nigeria's Lower Anambra Irrigation Development Project and Kogi State erosion control initiatives. Programme components designed include bench terracing with vegetative strip installation, vetiver grass contour barriers, gully headcut stabilisation with gabion structures, agroforestry integration using Leucaena leucocephala, and organic matter restoration through compost and cover cropping. Community participation frameworks and cost-sharing mechanisms are specified. Economic cost-benefit analysis shows a positive net present value over 10 years for all three conservation scenarios tested. Expert review by seven soil conservation engineers and agronomists confirmed the programme's technical soundness. The study recommends implementation by Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources in partnership with World Bank-funded NEWMAP project activities.
