Professional Design of a Moringa Production and Processing Programme for Nutritional Security in Jigawa State

Moringa oleifera, the drumstick tree, is a highly nutritious multi-purpose crop with demonstrated potential for addressing micronutrient deficiency in northern Nigerian communities, and designing a professionally grounded production and processing programme for Jigawa State would leverage this potential at scale. This study designed a moringa production and processing programme for nutritional security improvement in Dutse, Hadejia, and Ringim LGAs of Jigawa State, North West Nigeria. A professional programme design methodology was employed, drawing on agro-ecological suitability assessment of Jigawa for moringa production, market and nutritional value chain analysis, household dietary assessment of 100 households to document micronutrient gap profiles, and structured consultations with 10 nutritionists, 8 agronomists, and 6 social enterprise development specialists. Agro-ecological assessment confirmed that the semi-arid climate of Jigawa is well suited to moringa production, with potential for two leaf harvests per year under irrigation. Dietary assessment confirmed high prevalence of iron (68 percent), zinc (54 percent), and vitamin A (47 percent) deficiency in the target population. The programme designed encompasses nursery establishment, field production guidelines, solar drying and leaf powder processing specifications, and market linkage with institutional buyers (hospitals, schools). A social enterprise model centred on women's processing cooperatives is specified. Expert review by nine nutrition-sensitive agriculture and programme design specialists confirmed the programme's scientific and programmatic soundness. The study recommends implementation by the Jigawa State Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with UNICEF Nigeria's nutrition-sensitive agriculture programme.
