Data Visualisation of HIV/AIDS Prevalence Trends Across Nigerian States Using Dashboard Analytics

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Effective communication of public health data through interactive dashboards enables policymakers and health managers to make evidence-based decisions on resource allocation and programme targeting. This study developed and evaluated an interactive data visualisation dashboard to represent HIV and AIDS prevalence, incidence, and antiretroviral therapy coverage trends across Nigerian states from 2010 to 2022. Data were sourced from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS and UNAIDS Nigeria country reports. The dashboard was built using Python Plotly Dash and incorporated choropleth maps, time-series line charts, bar comparisons, and filter interactivity by year, zone, and indicator type. A usability evaluation was conducted with 45 public health professionals, health policymakers, and data analysts using the System Usability Scale. The mean SUS score was 79.4, indicating high usability. Visualisations revealed that South South states maintained consistently higher prevalence rates than other zones, with Rivers and Benue States showing minimal declines since 2015. Northern states demonstrated faster ART coverage growth but lower absolute treatment rates. Dashboard interactivity enabled users to identify cross-state disparities not apparent in static report tables. Respondents reported reduced data interpretation time and improved confidence in evidence communication. Limitations include dependence on survey-based prevalence estimates with differing methodologies across years. Recommendations include deployment of the dashboard to NACA state coordinators, annual data refresh cycles, and expansion to include disaggregated data by age, sex, and treatment programme type.
