Assessment of Theatre Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria’s National Theatre

Theatre accessibility for persons with disabilities is a rights-based obligation and an equity concern that most Nigerian cultural institutions have yet to adequately address, and evaluating the National Theatre Lagos provides baseline data for inclusive arts policy. This study assessed the physical, programmatic, and communicative accessibility of Nigeria's National Theatre, Lagos, for persons with various disabilities. A mixed-methods assessment combined facility audits against the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities accessibility standards, structured interviews with 20 persons with disabilities (visual, hearing, mobility) who had visited or attempted to visit the National Theatre, and a questionnaire survey of 10 theatre management staff. Facility audits revealed that ramp access was present but poorly maintained, that no sign language interpretation was available for any production in the 2021 to 2023 period reviewed, and that audio description services for visually impaired audiences were entirely absent. None of the 20 interviewed persons with disabilities rated their National Theatre experience as fully accessible. Management staff acknowledged awareness of accessibility obligations but cited funding and technical capacity gaps as barriers. The study concludes that Nigeria's National Theatre falls significantly short of international disability inclusion standards. Recommendations include mandatory annual accessibility audits, budget allocation for sign language interpretation services, training of front-of-house staff in disability-inclusive service, and engagement of disability advocacy organisations in production planning.
