Study of the Staging Conventions of Hausa Opera and Its Audience Dynamics in Sokoto State

Hausa opera combines music, dialogue, and movement in a popular entertainment form that has a large following in North West Nigeria, and examining its staging conventions and audience dynamics in Sokoto State provides insight into this understudied performance tradition. This study examined the staging conventions and audience dynamics of Hausa opera in Sokoto North and Wamakko Local Government Areas, Sokoto State, North West Nigeria. A qualitative ethnographic design employed observation of four Hausa opera performances, interviews with 10 performers, 5 producers, and 30 audience members, and analysis of available production recordings. The study used performance studies frameworks to analyse audience-performer interaction, spatial arrangements, and performance codes. Results revealed that Hausa opera performances integrated traditional narrative themes with contemporary social commentary. Audience participation through call-and-response was a central structural feature in all four observed performances. Female audience members, though present in smaller numbers, demonstrated equal or higher levels of call-and-response engagement. Productions typically ran for three to five hours, significantly longer than Western theatrical conventions. Practitioners reported declining professional opportunities due to competition from recorded music but maintained that live performance retained a dedicated audience. The study concludes that Hausa opera is a distinctive and vibrant performance tradition whose conventions merit scholarly documentation. Recommendations include formal academic documentation programmes, state arts council support for Hausa opera practitioners, and inclusion of Hausa opera study in northern Nigerian university drama curricula.
