Assessment of Physical Environment Standards in Government ECDE Centres in Zamfara State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The physical learning environment of early childhood centres significantly influences children's development, safety, and wellbeing, and assessing its quality in Zamfara State government centres provides evidence for infrastructure improvement in North West Nigeria. This study assessed physical environment standards in government ECDE centres in Gusau, Tsafe, and Talata Mafara Local Government Areas, Zamfara State. A facility audit methodology was employed, with 20 centres assessed using a 50-item Physical Learning Environment Checklist covering classroom size, ventilation, lighting, furniture appropriateness, sanitation facilities, safety features, and learning materials. Results showed that classroom size per child fell below the recommended 2 square metres in 80 percent of centres. Natural lighting was inadequate in 60 percent. Child-appropriate furniture was present in only 35 percent of classrooms. Functioning, clean sanitation facilities accessible to children were available in only 25 percent. Safety features including rounded furniture edges and covered electrical outlets were largely absent. Basic learning materials were insufficient in 70 percent of centres. The study concludes that government ECDE physical environments in Zamfara State are significantly below minimum standards. Recommendations include a state ECDE infrastructure upgrade fund, phased refurbishment targeting sanitation and safety first, and community participation in centre maintenance to improve sustainability of improvements.
