An Original Investigation into the Sociocultural Mediation of Executive Function Development in Nigerian Pre-School Children

Executive function development is theorised by Vygotsky as fundamentally socioculturally mediated, yet the specific cultural tools, social interactions, and institutional practices through which Nigerian caregiving communities scaffold executive function represent an almost entirely uncharted research frontier. This study conducted an original investigation into the sociocultural mediation of executive function development in pre-school children across Igbo (Anambra State), Yoruba (Osun State), and Hausa-Fulani (Kano State) communities. A sociocultural developmental methodology combining Vygotskian theoretical analysis, cross-cultural assessment, and video ethnography was employed over 18 months. Executive function was assessed using the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task, Corsi block span, and Flexible Item Selection Task in culturally adapted forms at ages 3 and 5. Video ethnographic data documented naturally occurring executive function scaffolding interactions during communal meals, craft activities, religious instruction, and play across all three communities. Hausa-Fulani children showed higher inhibitory control growth rates, attributed to structured Quranic recitation practices requiring sustained attention and response inhibition. Yoruba children showed strongest working memory development linked to oral memorisation traditions in religious and cultural contexts. Igbo children showed strongest cognitive flexibility linked to market trading apprenticeship exposure. Cross-cultural comparison confirmed cultural specificity of EF scaffolding tools while confirming universal developmental sequencing. The original Sociocultural EF Mediation Framework for Nigerian Communities theorises culture-specific and universal mediation mechanisms. Expert review by 24 specialists confirmed the framework's original theoretical contribution to sociocultural EF development science.
