Cultural Capital, Schooling, and Educational Inequality in Rural Northern Nigeria: A Bourdieusian Analysis

This study conducts a Bourdieusian analysis of the role of cultural capital in the production and reproduction of educational inequality in rural communities in Northern Nigeria. Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of capital, field, and habitus offer a powerful sociological framework for understanding how structural advantages and disadvantages become embedded in educational experiences and outcomes. In rural Northern Nigeria, where low-income communities, nomadic groups, and minority ethnic populations interact with formal schooling systems designed around dominant cultural assumptions, Bourdieu's framework provides critical analytical purchase. The study employs an interpretivist qualitative design using multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork across six rural communities in Sokoto, Katsina, and Zamfara States over 12 months. Methods include participant observation in schools and homes, in-depth interviews with 80 students, parents, teachers, and community leaders, and documentary analysis of school records. Data are analysed through Thematic Discourse Analysis situated within the Bourdieusian theoretical framework. Findings demonstrate that children from households with lower volumes of institutionalised cultural capital consistently experience systematic disadvantage within schooling fields that privilege linguistic, symbolic, and cultural resources associated with urban, educated, and male identities. The conversion of economic to educational capital is severely constrained by the structural conditions of rural Northern schooling. The study makes original theoretical contributions by extending Bourdieu's educational sociology into the context of rural Islamic Nigerian communities. Policy recommendations target structural reforms in curriculum, language of instruction, and teacher cultural competency.
