A Critical Theory of Educational Inequality in Nigeria: Structural Reproduction, Agency, and the Limits of Reform

This study develops an original critical theoretical framework for understanding educational inequality in Nigeria, integrating structural reproduction theory, Freirean critical pedagogy, and African ubuntu philosophy to produce a contextually grounded explanation of how inequality is generated, sustained, and potentially transformed in Nigerian education. Existing theoretical treatments of Nigerian educational inequality draw predominantly on Western frameworks that inadequately account for the specific historical, colonial, and cultural dynamics shaping the Nigerian context. This study employs a critical theoretical research design, engaging in systematic theoretical construction through philosophical analysis, selective empirical grounding using existing survey data from the National Bureau of Statistics and NUC databases, and critical dialogue with 25 Nigerian education scholars through structured expert consultations. The theoretical framework identifies four mechanisms of educational inequality reproduction: structural underfunding, cultural capital misrecognition, geographical marginalisation, and governance capture. Original theoretical contributions include the concept of colonial curriculum hangover as a mechanism of cultural exclusion and the civic agency model as a pathway for inequality transformation through community-based education resistance. The framework is empirically illustrated using inequality data from all six geopolitical zones. The study concludes that educational inequality in Nigeria is not a residual development problem but a structurally reproduced outcome of colonial and post-colonial governance arrangements. It recommends a national educational reconstruction agenda informed by the framework's principles of cultural recognition, structural funding reform, and community agency enhancement as preconditions for genuine equality of educational opportunity.
