Teacher Knowledge, Pedagogical Practice, and Learning Outcomes in Nigerian Secondary Schools: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach

This study develops and tests a comprehensive structural model of the pathways from teacher knowledge to pedagogical practice to student learning outcomes in Nigerian secondary schools, generating original causal evidence on the teacher quality-outcome relationship. Despite extensive literature on teacher quality as a determinant of educational outcomes, the specific causal mechanisms linking teacher knowledge dimensions to learning in low-income country secondary school contexts are inadequately established. This study uses a cross-sectional design with latent variable analysis, collecting data from 800 teachers and 4,000 students in 80 secondary schools across six Nigerian states representing all geopolitical zones. Teacher knowledge is assessed across subject matter knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and curriculum knowledge using validated but locally adapted instruments. Pedagogical practice is observed and rated using a structured classroom observation protocol. Student learning outcomes are measured using standardised assessments in Mathematics and English Language. Structural equation modelling with multi-group analysis by geopolitical zone and school type is applied. Results establish that pedagogical content knowledge, rather than subject matter knowledge alone, has the strongest direct effect on learning outcomes, confirming the mediating importance of knowledge-in-practice. School culture moderates the knowledge-practice pathway, with collaborative school environments strengthening the translation of teacher knowledge into effective practice. Multi-group analysis reveals consistent structural relationships across geopolitical zones. The study contributes an original Teacher Quality Pathway Model for Nigerian secondary education and recommends that teacher education reform focus explicitly on pedagogical content knowledge development alongside subject matter training.
