Reconstructing the Philosophy of Education for Post-Colonial Africa: Ubuntu, Critical Pedagogy, and the Nigerian Experience

This study undertakes an original philosophical reconstruction of the foundations of education for post-colonial Africa, drawing on ubuntu philosophy, Freirean critical pedagogy, and the specific historical and cultural experience of Nigerian education to develop a contextually grounded African philosophy of education. Dominant philosophies of education operating in Nigerian educational institutions, including liberal education, pragmatism, and essentialism, are largely derived from Western philosophical traditions and carry colonial epistemological assumptions. A contextually adequate philosophy of education for contemporary Nigeria must engage authentically with African philosophical heritage, the continuing effects of colonial miseducation, and the developmental aspirations of a diverse, multicultural society. This study employs philosophical reconstruction methodology, engaging in systematic critical analysis of Western educational philosophy traditions, recovery of ubuntu philosophical principles from primary African philosophical literature, critical engagement with Freirean and post-colonial educational theory, and application of the emergent synthesis to the Nigerian educational context. Expert consultations with 20 African philosophers of education from Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana provide dialogic validation of the philosophical argument. The study produces an original Post-Colonial Ubuntu Pedagogy framework specifying philosophical principles for curriculum design, teaching practice, assessment, and school-community relations in Nigerian educational contexts. It concludes that education philosophy reform is a prerequisite for the deeper transformation of Nigerian education from a colonial instrument to an authentic tool of African development. It recommends that educational foundations as a discipline lead a national philosophical reform dialogue through the universities, professional associations, and Federal Ministry of Education.
