Neurobiological Correlates of Learning Disabilities and the Development of Culturally Adapted Assessment Tools for Nigerian Primary Schools

This study investigates the neurobiological correlates of specific learning disabilities and uses these findings to inform the development and validation of culturally adapted assessment tools for Nigerian primary school populations. The use of Western-normed psychometric instruments in Nigerian schools has been widely critiqued for cultural and linguistic invalidity, yet no nationally standardised learning disability assessment tools exist for Nigerian children. The study employs a multi-phase design: an initial neuropsychological profiling phase comparing 120 primary school children with diagnosed learning disabilities to 120 typically developing controls across six states representing all geopolitical zones, using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery; followed by an instrument development phase using cognitive interviews, think-aloud protocols, and item response theory analyses with 600 children across twelve schools; and finally a standardisation and validation phase with a nationally representative sample of 1,200 children. Data were analysed using hierarchical cluster analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and differential item functioning tests. Results from the profiling phase identified processing speed, phonological memory, and visuospatial integration as the neuropsychological dimensions most diagnostically significant across learning disability subtypes in the Nigerian sample. The resulting Nigerian Learning Disability Assessment Battery demonstrates robust psychometric properties across geographic, linguistic, and socioeconomic groups. This study makes an original and substantial contribution to the psychometric and neuropsychological literature on learning disabilities in Africa.
