Entrepreneurship and Local Economic Development in Nassarawa State: A Study of Agro-Processing Enterprises

This study examines the contribution of agro-processing entrepreneurship to local economic development in Nassarawa State, North Central Nigeria, investigating how small and medium enterprises engaged in the processing of cassava, soybean, and sesame seed create employment, add value to agricultural output, and generate multiplier effects in local economies. Nassarawa State's predominantly agricultural economy and proximity to Abuja as a consumer market create favourable conditions for agro-processing entrepreneurship, but the sector's development potential has been constrained by processing infrastructure limitations, market access gaps, and technical capacity weaknesses. The study employs a descriptive survey design, drawing a sample of 150 agro-processing enterprise owners from the Lafia, Keffi, and Akwanga agro-processing clusters. A structured questionnaire collected data on enterprise employment, value addition metrics, market reach, and backward linkage effects on primary farmers. Findings indicate that agro-processing enterprises in the sample collectively employ an average of seven workers per enterprise, with the majority of these in semi-skilled processing roles. Backward linkages to primary farmers are strong, with 82 percent of enterprises sourcing primarily from local smallholders. Forward market linkages are dominated by local and Abuja wholesale markets, with export and supermarket market access achieved by fewer than 10 percent of enterprises. Recommendations include the development of a Nassarawa State agro-processing industrial cluster with shared processing equipment and cold chain infrastructure to address the capital barriers facing individual enterprise investment.
