📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the role of trade fairs and business exhibitions in the development of small and medium enterprises in Imo State, South East Nigeria, investigating how participation in formal and informal trade events affects business visibility, network development, market intelligence, and sales outcomes for participating SMEs. Trade fairs have historically served as important market coordination mechanisms for Nigerian SMEs, providing affordable access to buyer networks that individual marketing budgets cannot otherwise reach, yet systematic evidence on the business development value of trade fair participation in the South East Nigerian context is limited. The study employs a descriptive survey design, administering a structured questionnaire to 160 SME owners who had participated in at least one trade fair in Imo State during the preceding 24 months, drawn from the Owerri National Trade Fair and Orlu and Okigwe district exhibitions. Data captured business type, participation frequency, investment in exhibition, and business outcomes attributed to trade fair participation including new client acquisition, partnership formation, and revenue impact. Findings indicate that trade fair participation produces meaningful new business contact outcomes for 71 percent of respondents, though conversion from initial contact to completed sales transactions takes an average of three months. Product and craft enterprises benefit more significantly than service enterprises from trade fair exposure. Recommendations include increased government subsidy of Imo State SME trade fair participation costs and the development of a dedicated South East regional SME trade fair with international buyer invitations. Keywords: trade fair, SME development, Imo State, business networking, market access.
