Methodological Contributions to Environmental Management Research in Data-Scarce African Contexts: Triangulation, Uncertainty, and Validation

This dissertation makes original methodological contributions to environmental management research practice in data-scarce African contexts, developing and validating novel approaches to data triangulation, uncertainty characterisation, and result validation that extend the methodological toolkit available to environmental management researchers working in sub-Saharan Africa. Environmental management research in African contexts is systematically constrained by the scarcity of long-term monitoring data, limited availability of high-quality spatial datasets, inconsistent institutional records, and restricted access to some research populations, creating methodological challenges that conventional research design texts do not adequately address. The dissertation makes four interconnected methodological contributions: a triangulation architecture for environmental condition assessment in data-scarce contexts that systematically combines remote sensing, participatory assessment, and physical measurement to compensate for individual data source limitations and quantify combined uncertainty bounds; a Bayesian framework for incorporating expert elicitation data into environmental trend analysis when instrumental monitoring records are too short for conventional statistical analysis; a multi-method validation protocol for qualitative institutional analysis in complex environmental governance contexts; and a community validation methodology that tests research findings for practical relevance and community recognition before publication. Each methodological contribution is developed and tested through application to a substantive environmental management problem in Nigeria, covering groundwater contamination assessment in Ekiti State, forest degradation trend analysis in Ondo State, environmental governance quality assessment in Cross River State, and community-based restoration management analysis in Kano State. The dissertation provides a methodological reference for African environmental management researchers across all four contribution areas.
