Assessment of Nutrient Management Practices on Sorghum Farms in Kebbi State

Sorghum is a drought-tolerant cereal of high importance to food security and brewing industries in northern Nigeria. In Kebbi State, located in Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone, sorghum production supports household food needs and generates income, yet productivity remains below achievable levels partly due to inadequate soil nutrient management. This study assesses nutrient management practices on sorghum farms in Kebbi State and evaluates their implications for grain yield. Data were collected from 135 sorghum farmers across three local government areas using a structured interview schedule. Variables assessed include fertiliser type, application rate and timing, use of organic manure, and soil testing behaviour. Yield estimates were obtained through crop cut assessments on randomly selected plots. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were applied. Findings indicate that 58 percent of farmers apply no inorganic fertiliser to their sorghum plots, relying entirely on residual soil fertility and organic matter from previous crop residues. Among fertiliser users, application rates averaging 32 kg NPK per hectare were well below recommended levels of 60 to 90 kg. Only 4 percent of farmers had ever conducted a soil test. Organic manure (cattle dung) was applied by 41 percent of respondents, primarily those with livestock. Fertiliser users recorded yields 48 percent higher than non-users. The study recommends subsidised fertiliser distribution targeted specifically at sorghum producers in Kebbi and the promotion of integrated soil fertility management approaches through extension programmes.
