Credit Union Operations and Member Financial Welfare in Plateau State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Credit unions serve as member-owned cooperative financial institutions that pool savings and provide affordable credit to members, representing an important alternative to formal banking for many Nigerians in the North Central geopolitical zone. This study examines the operations of credit unions and their effect on the financial welfare of members in Plateau State, using a survey research design. Primary data are collected from 210 members of six registered credit unions in Jos, Barkin Ladi, and Shendam through structured questionnaires and focus group discussions. The financial welfare indicators assessed include loan access, savings accumulation, household income stability, and ability to manage financial emergencies. Data are analysed using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests comparing pre- and post-membership financial outcomes, and multiple regression identifying predictors of member satisfaction. The research is grounded in cooperative financial theory and the social capital literature, which together explain how trust-based institutions create value for members that commercial alternatives cannot easily replicate. The study also examines governance structures, contribution regularity, and loan recovery practices within the selected credit unions. Recent literature from Nigeria highlights both the developmental potential and the governance vulnerabilities of cooperative savings institutions, particularly in the context of limited regulatory oversight. Findings are expected to inform the Cooperative Development Agency in Plateau State, the National Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, and non-governmental organisations supporting cooperative capacity building in the North Central zone.
