📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Political campaign design in Nigeria employs typography, colour, and visual symbol systems to construct candidate identities and communicate partisan messages across a visually diverse and multilingual electorate. This study examines the typography and visual identity strategies deployed in political campaign materials produced during the 2023 Nigerian general elections, drawing on a national sample of posters, billboards, digital graphics, and broadcast visuals from campaigns in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, and Port Harcourt. A content analysis methodology is applied to 300 campaign materials, coding for font choices, headline and body text hierarchies, colour schemes, logo usage, and the visual integration of party identity with candidate personal brand. Follow-up interviews are conducted with 12 campaign graphic designers. The theoretical framework draws on political communication design, visual rhetoric, and the electoral campaign literature. The study examines whether design quality and strategic visual communication coherence correlate with party resources, reflecting a commercial design advantage for well-funded campaigns. The geographic spread across South West, North West, South East, and South South zones allows for comparison of regional design conventions in campaign visuals. Recent scholarship on African electoral communication has paid limited attention to the design dimension of campaign materials, focusing more on messaging content. Findings contribute to the graphic design literature on political communication and provide insights for campaign communications advisors and electoral management bodies. Keywords: typography, political campaign design, visual identity, Nigeria, electoral communication
