Design and Implementation of a Web-Based Student Result Management System: A Case Study of Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State

The management of student academic results in Nigerian public universities has long been characterised by delays, record inconsistencies, and vulnerability to manual errors. This study focuses on the design and implementation of a web-based student result management system, using Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, as a case study. The research investigates the limitations of the existing paper-based and semi-automated result processing systems currently in use at the institution, identifying key bottlenecks such as delayed publication of results, data duplication, and restricted accessibility for students. A descriptive survey approach was adopted, with data collected through structured questionnaires administered to 120 students and 30 academic staff members. The proposed system was developed using PHP, MySQL, and a responsive HTML interface, enabling real-time result entry, verification, and publication. Functional testing confirmed the system's reliability in processing results for multiple departments simultaneously while enforcing role-based access control for administrators, lecturers, and students. The findings indicate that automation of result management reduces processing time by an estimated 70 percent and significantly minimises transcription errors. The study contributes to ongoing efforts to digitalise administrative processes in Nigerian higher education institutions, particularly in the North West geopolitical zone. It is recommended that the university adopt and scale the system across all faculties, with adequate training provided for academic and non-academic staff.
