Development of an E-Learning Platform for Vocational Training Centres in Kano State

Vocational and technical education in northern Nigeria faces significant challenges relating to limited qualified instructors, outdated training materials, and restricted access to practical learning opportunities. This study focuses on the development of an e-learning platform tailored to the curriculum needs of vocational training centres in Kano State, North West Nigeria. A descriptive survey involving 150 trainees and 25 instructors across five vocational training centres in Kano metropolis was conducted to identify content gaps and technology access patterns. Findings revealed that 63 percent of trainees own basic smartphones with internet access, while only 22 percent had previously used any form of digital learning tool. The platform was built using the Moodle learning management system, customised with Hausa-language navigation options and offline-capable course modules covering trades such as tailoring, plumbing, and electrical installation. Video demonstrations, interactive quizzes, and a competency tracking dashboard were integrated to align with the National Board for Technical Education standards. Usability testing with a group of 40 trainees over four weeks showed measurable improvement in knowledge retention scores compared to the control group receiving only classroom instruction. The study recommends that the Kano State Government integrate the platform into all accredited vocational centres and provide instructor capacity building for digital content delivery.
