Conventional paper-based examination systems in Nigerian polytechnics are associated with high administration costs, examination malpractice, and delayed result processing. This study addresses these challenges through the design and implementation of an online examination system for polytechnics in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, with particular focus on the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi. A feasibility study involving 200 students and 20 academic staff established that the institution has adequate computer laboratory facilities to support computer-based testing for at least 60 percent of its student population. The system was developed using Django (Python framework) with a PostgreSQL database, incorporating randomised question sequencing, auto-grading for objective questions, time-controlled sessions, and an invigilator monitoring dashboard. Anti-malpractice features include IP-address locking, browser tab-switch detection, and real-time submission logging. A pilot examination conducted with 80 first-year students showed a 92 percent completion rate and zero incidents of question paper leakage compared to three documented incidents in the preceding paper-based semester. Results were made available within two hours of examination completion. The study recommends that the National Board for Technical Education develop guidelines for online examination adoption across all affiliated polytechnics.
