Implementation of Business Intelligence Tools in Nigerian Microfinance Banks: A Study of Selected Institutions in Enugu State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Microfinance banks in Nigeria serve millions of low-income customers and smallholder businesses, yet their capacity for data-driven operational decision-making through business intelligence tools remains limited. This study examines the implementation of business intelligence tools in microfinance banks in Enugu State, South East Nigeria, focusing on ten institutions licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. A mixed-methods approach combining structured interviews with IT managers and analysis of existing reporting processes was employed. The study investigates the types of business intelligence tools currently in use, the business functions most benefiting from analytics, barriers to broader implementation, and the outcomes of existing deployments. Findings reveal that only three institutions use dedicated business intelligence software, with the majority relying on manual spreadsheet-based reporting. Barriers to adoption include high software licensing costs, inadequate IT infrastructure, limited data analytics expertise among staff, and insufficient executive understanding of business intelligence value. Institutions that have implemented business intelligence tools report improvements in loan portfolio quality monitoring and customer segment profitability analysis. The study recommends that the Central Bank of Nigeria include business intelligence capability benchmarks in its microfinance supervision framework and that microfinance industry associations facilitate collective technology procurement to reduce individual institution costs. Keywords: business intelligence, microfinance banks, Enugu State, data analytics, financial technology.
