Availability and Use of Electronic Resources in Enugu State University of Science and Technology Library

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study evaluated the availability and utilisation of electronic resources at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Library in South East Nigeria. With increasing global emphasis on digital library services, it has become imperative for Nigerian university libraries to assess the extent to which electronic resources are accessible and used by their clientele. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from 250 academic staff and postgraduate students through a structured questionnaire. The study found that although several electronic databases were subscribed to, including African Journals Online and Hinari, awareness and use remained low among the majority of respondents. Infrastructure challenges, including erratic internet connectivity and insufficient computer workstations, were identified as the most critical barriers to use. Academic staff reported higher utilisation rates compared to postgraduate students, suggesting a need for targeted training at the student level. The study recommended sustained investment in ICT infrastructure, regular user education workshops, and stronger collaboration between library staff and academic departments to promote database awareness. Keywords: electronic resources, academic library, availability, utilisation, Enugu State University.
