Library Anxiety Among First-Year Students in Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi

This study investigated the prevalence and causes of library anxiety among first-year students at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in Benue State, North Central Nigeria. Library anxiety is a recognised psychological barrier that affects new students transitioning to university-level research environments. The study used a descriptive survey design and administered an adapted version of the Bostick Library Anxiety Scale to 300 first-year students drawn from three colleges. Findings revealed a moderate-to-high level of library anxiety among respondents, with the most common sources being unfamiliarity with catalogue systems, uncertainty about locating materials, and fear of appearing incompetent to library staff. Female students reported slightly higher anxiety levels than their male counterparts. The study recommended that library management introduce structured induction programmes specifically designed for incoming students, train library staff in approachable communication, and install clear directional signage throughout the library. These measures are essential for creating an inclusive environment that supports academic success among all student groups. The study contributes to evidence on affective barriers to library use in Nigerian agricultural universities.
