Information Literacy Skills Among Undergraduates of Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State

This study assessed the level of information literacy skills among undergraduate students at Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State, North West Nigeria. Information literacy has become an essential competency in the knowledge economy, enabling individuals to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use information. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected from 280 students across five departments using a structured questionnaire based on the Association of College and Research Libraries information literacy framework. Findings revealed moderate levels of information literacy overall, with students scoring higher on the ability to identify information needs and lower on skills related to evaluating source credibility and applying ethical use of information. Students from departments with more structured research training demonstrated higher literacy scores. The study recommended that the university incorporate a compulsory information literacy module into the general studies curriculum and that the library develop online tutorials aligned with the academic needs of each faculty.
