📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study evaluated archival management practices at the Taraba State Government Secretariat in Jalingo, North East Nigeria. Efficient management of government archives is essential for administrative continuity, legal compliance, and historical documentation of state activities. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from records officers and administrative personnel through structured questionnaires and direct observation. Findings revealed significant weaknesses: there was no dedicated archive facility, current records were stored in general office spaces, and disposal of records was conducted without formal appraisal. Staff lacked formal training in archival management, and digital record-keeping was not yet in use. The study recommended the establishment of a properly constituted state archival centre, the recruitment of professionally trained archivists, the adoption of a digital records management system, and the development of a records retention and disposal schedule aligned with legal requirements. Keywords: archival management, government records, Taraba State, records retention, North East Nigeria.
