The Semiotics of Logo Language in Nigerian Corporate Institutions: A Multimodal Analysis of Selected Banks

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study presents a multimodal semiotic analysis of the logo language of selected Nigerian corporate banks, examining how visual, typographic, and verbal elements combine to construct institutional identity and communicate corporate values to multilingual Nigerian audiences. Corporate semiosis in the Nigerian banking sector reflects a complex negotiation of global financial brand conventions and local cultural signification systems, yet semiotic analyses of Nigerian corporate visual language remain scarce. The study adopts a multimodal social semiotic methodology drawing on Kress and van Leeuwen's grammar of visual design and Halliday's metafunctional framework extended to multimodal texts. Logos from ten leading Nigerian commercial banks were collected from official websites and institutional publications and subjected to systematic analysis across colour, typography, iconography, and verbal text dimensions. The analysis examines representational, interactive, and compositional meaning potentials in each logo and maps patterns of institutional identity construction across the sample. Findings reveal a dominant pattern of trust and stability signification through blue chromatic choices, geometric regularity, and Latinate or Anglophone typographic conventions, with recent rebranding exercises incorporating Afrocentric visual elements as strategies of national identity alignment. Verbal elements in logos predominantly favour English with minimal deployment of Nigerian language phrases. The research contributes to the semiotics of institutional communication in Nigeria and recommends multimodal literacy training for corporate communications professionals. Keywords: semiotics, corporate logos, multimodal analysis, Nigerian banks, institutional identity.
