Analysis of Mechanical Failure Modes in Agricultural Irrigation Pump Components Manufactured Locally in Kebbi State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study analyses the mechanical failure modes of irrigation pump components manufactured by local fabricators in Kebbi State, North West Nigeria. Agricultural irrigation is central to food production in the North West zone, and the premature failure of locally manufactured pump components including impellers, wear rings, and shafts results in significant productivity losses and financial burden for smallholder farmers. Failed component samples are obtained from ten irrigation schemes in Birnin Kebbi, Jega, and Argungu, and subjected to failure mode analysis using visual examination, dimensional inspection, hardness testing, optical microscopy, and SEM fractography. Chemical composition is verified by optical emission spectroscopy. Failure modes identified include fatigue cracking, abrasive wear, cavitation erosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Microstructural examination reveals inadequate heat treatment in locally cast impellers, resulting in coarse-grained microstructures with low fatigue resistance. Material composition analysis shows that several components were fabricated from recycled aluminium alloys with inconsistent alloying element contents. The study identifies manufacturing quality control deficiencies as the primary systemic cause of premature failure and recommends the adoption of standardised casting and heat treatment procedures in Kebbi State fabrication workshops, supported by technical extension services from the state's agricultural engineering programme.
