Evaluation of Child Nutrition Programmes Implemented by Non-Governmental Organisations in Zamfara State, North West Nigeria

North West Nigeria continues to face one of the highest rates of severe acute malnutrition globally, with Zamfara State among the states recording persistent nutritional emergencies. Non-governmental organisations have responded with community-based management of acute malnutrition and supplementary feeding programmes, yet independent evaluations of programme effectiveness in Zamfara remain limited. This study evaluates child nutrition programmes implemented by NGOs in three local government areas of Zamfara State, examining programme reach, treatment outcomes, caregiver satisfaction, and sustainability mechanisms. A mixed-methods evaluation design is applied, combining facility record reviews from 12 outpatient therapeutic programme centres, surveys of 280 caregivers of enrolled children, and key informant interviews with programme managers and local government nutrition focal persons. Quantitative data are analysed using SPSS, with cure rates, default rates, and mortality rates compared against SPHERE humanitarian standards. Qualitative data are analysed thematically. Evidence from UNICEF's 2022 North West Nigeria humanitarian situation report indicates cure rates below the 75 percent SPHERE threshold in several Zamfara facilities, driven by supply chain disruptions and security constraints. The Logic Model framework guides the evaluation of programme inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes. Findings will inform NGO programme redesign and state government integration strategies.
