Clinicopathological Profile of Cervical Cancer at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Abraka, South South Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Cervical cancer remains the most common gynaecological malignancy in Nigeria, and the South South zone bears a disproportionate burden due to high human papillomavirus prevalence, limited screening uptake, and late-stage presentation. This study examines the clinicopathological profile of cervical cancer cases managed at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Abraka, over a five-year period from 2018 to 2022. A retrospective descriptive design is applied to gynaecology oncology records and histopathology reports. Data include patient age, parity, menopausal status, presenting symptoms, clinical stage using FIGO staging, histological type, treatment modality initiated, and one-year follow-up outcome. SPSS is used for statistical analysis. Published gynaecological oncology series from South South Nigeria consistently identify squamous cell carcinoma as the dominant histological subtype, with over 70 percent of cases presenting at FIGO stage III or IV. The 2018 FIGO Staging Classification for Cervical Cancer provides the staging framework. Findings will support the unit in strengthening the institution's VIA-based screening programme and in establishing multidisciplinary tumour boards to improve the coordination of surgical, radiological, and chemotherapy services. Keywords: cervical cancer, clinicopathology, FIGO staging, Delta State, South South Nigeria.
