📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
University websites serve as primary digital touchpoints for prospective students, current students, staff, and institutional partners, and the usability and user experience quality of these platforms directly reflects institutional competitiveness and information accessibility. This study investigates website usability and user experience on the official websites of three federal universities in South East Nigeria: University of Nigeria Nsukka, Federal University of Technology Owerri, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. A mixed-methods usability testing design was employed, combining a standardised System Usability Scale questionnaire administered to 180 regular website users with heuristic evaluation by five ICT expert evaluators using Nielsen's ten usability heuristics. Descriptive statistics and inter-rater reliability calculations were computed in SPSS. Available website usability literature from South East Nigerian universities identifies slow page load times, non-functional navigation links, poor mobile responsiveness, and outdated content as the most critical usability deficiencies. Findings from the System Usability Scale indicate mean scores of 54.6 to 61.3 across the three institutions, below the industry-accepted good usability threshold of 68, with mobile users reporting significantly lower scores than desktop users. The study recommends adoption of responsive web design standards, regular content auditing schedules, and user-centred redesign informed by systematic usability testing. Keywords: website usability, user experience, federal universities, South East Nigeria, System Usability Scale.
