Prevalence of Burnout Among Radiographers in Tertiary Hospitals in Anambra State, South East Nigeria

Professional burnout is an occupational health challenge of increasing relevance in Nigerian healthcare, driven by staff shortages, high patient volumes, inadequate equipment, and limited professional development opportunities. Among radiographers in tertiary hospitals, the combination of radiation exposure concerns, shift work, and emotional patient interactions creates a distinctive burnout risk profile. This study examines the prevalence and predictors of burnout among radiographers in tertiary hospitals in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design is employed, with the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey administered to 112 radiographers at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital. The instrument measures emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and reduced personal accomplishment subscales, alongside demographic and occupational predictor variables. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression are computed in SPSS. Available burnout literature from South East Nigerian hospital settings identifies heavy workload, inadequate compensation, and poor equipment condition as the three most cited burnout drivers among allied health professionals. The Job Demands-Resources Model provides the theoretical framework for analysing the burnout risk profile. Findings are expected to reveal elevated emotional exhaustion scores, particularly among radiographers with more than ten years of experience in high-volume departments. Recommendations address institutional wellness programmes, workload management policies, and staff rotational systems to mitigate burnout risk in Anambra State radiology departments.
