Knowledge and Attitude of Healthcare Workers Towards Radiation Hazards at Specialist Hospital Yola, Adamawa State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Non-radiography healthcare workers who accompany patients into X-ray rooms or work in proximity to radiation-generating equipment are potentially exposed to ionising radiation without the formal radiation protection training received by radiographers. In Adamawa State, Specialist Hospital Yola serves a diverse clinical workforce whose radiation hazard knowledge and safety attitudes warrant assessment. This study examines the knowledge of radiation hazards and attitudes towards radiation safety among non-radiography healthcare workers at Specialist Hospital Yola. A cross-sectional survey is conducted among 200 nurses, clinical officers, porters, and allied health workers at the hospital, using a validated Radiation Knowledge and Attitude Questionnaire. The questionnaire measures awareness of ionising radiation types, understanding of cumulative dose effects, attitudes toward protective behaviours during patient imaging, and compliance with room clearance instructions. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests comparing knowledge across professional groups are computed in SPSS. Literature from North East Nigerian hospitals identifies nurses as the professional group most frequently present in X-ray rooms without adequate radiation protection awareness, with limited radiation protection information provided during nursing training as the primary knowledge gap source. The ICRP Publication 105 radiation protection in medicine framework provides the analytical standard. Findings are expected to reveal significantly lower radiation safety knowledge among porters and administrative staff compared to clinical workers. Recommendations address a structured non-radiography staff radiation orientation programme and a mandatory radiation safety induction for all Specialist Hospital Yola staff categories.
