Theoretical Development of a Radiography Continuing Professional Development Model for Sub-Saharan African Contexts: Original Contribution from Nigeria

Continuing professional development models in radiography have been developed for high-income healthcare systems where online platforms, professional events, and journal access are readily available, yet these models are insufficiently adapted to the structural constraints of sub-Saharan African radiography practice where connectivity, funding, and professional development infrastructure differ fundamentally. This study develops an original CPD model for radiography in sub-Saharan African contexts, using Nigeria as the primary developmental case. The model development follows a design-based research methodology: need identification through a national CPD survey of 600 Nigerian radiographers across all zones documenting current CPD participation barriers, activity preferences, and self-assessed learning needs; conceptual framework development through critical literature synthesis of CPD theories and African professional development constraints; prototype model co-design with 40 radiography CPD stakeholders including NRBN, university lecturers, and practising radiographers; prototype pilot implementation with 80 radiographers over twelve months using hybrid online-peer learning CPD formats; and outcomes evaluation assessing competency change and participation sustainability. The original NRBN-Adaptable Radiography CPD Model specifies four evidence-based delivery modes, a flexible credit accumulation architecture, peer-led local CPD hub structures, and an NRBN digital credentialing system. Available African radiography CPD literature identifies the absence of a context-validated African radiography CPD model as the primary gap. The Self-Determination Theory of CPD motivation and the Transformative Learning Theory provide the theoretical reference.
