A Comparative Study of Software Development Methodologies in Nigerian IT Outsourcing Firms

Nigerian IT outsourcing firms occupy an emerging position in the global software services market, yet methodological maturity within the sector is inconsistently developed and empirically understudied. This study comparatively examines software development methodology adoption and outcomes across agile, waterfall, and hybrid approaches in Nigerian IT outsourcing firms, addressing a gap in African software engineering process research. Data was collected from 12 IT outsourcing firms in Lagos and Abuja through structured questionnaires administered to 65 project managers, developers, and client relationship managers, supplemented by analysis of 24 archived project delivery reports. Outcome variables include schedule variance, cost variance, client satisfaction scores, and defect density. Statistical comparison using ANOVA shows that agile projects achieve significantly lower schedule variance than waterfall projects (p = 0.03), but no statistically significant difference in cost variance is observed. Hybrid methodology projects report the highest client satisfaction scores, suggesting that methodological flexibility is valued by international outsourcing clients. The study identifies client requirement stability, project duration, and team distribution as the three strongest contextual factors predicting methodology suitability. A methodology selection decision framework adapted to Nigerian outsourcing firm characteristics is proposed and validated through expert review.
