A Documentation of Contemporary Nollywood Production Design and Its Aesthetic Evolution

Production design in Nollywood cinema has evolved significantly from the low-budget improvised aesthetics of early video film production toward more sophisticated set design, location selection, and visual world-building practices that now characterise premium Nollywood productions. This study documented the aesthetic evolution of production design in Nollywood and examined current professional standards and creative approaches. A descriptive qualitative design was adopted, combining structured interviews with twelve production designers and three art directors from Lagos and Abuja-based film production companies, set observation during two active film productions, and content analysis of 20 Nollywood films released between 2019 and 2023. Visual analysis focused on set construction quality, period accuracy, spatial storytelling, and genre-specific design conventions. Interview data captured professional formation pathways, creative process methodology, and industry infrastructure challenges. Results showed a clear quality stratification between premium streaming-funded productions (Iroko TV, Amazon Prime originals) and lower-budget home video productions. Contemporary production designers described increasing client demand for international visual standards driven by diaspora audiences and global platform distribution. Formal training in production design is rare, with 83.3 percent of respondents self-trained or informally mentored. Budget constraint remains the dominant creative limitation. The study concludes that Nollywood production design is at a critical developmental moment and recommends formal training pathways, industry association standards, and collaborative research between film schools and the Nollywood industry to develop Nigerian visual storytelling vocabulary.
