A Documentation of Ndebele-Inspired Geometric Art Forms and Their Adaptation in Nigerian Mural Practice

Southern African geometric mural traditions, particularly those associated with Ndebele women's art, have been adopted and adapted by Nigerian street and community muralists, and documenting this cross-cultural exchange illuminates the dynamics of contemporary African visual art influence networks. This study documented the adaptation of Ndebele-inspired geometric art forms in Nigerian mural practice, with fieldwork conducted in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, combining photographic documentation and visual analysis of 36 murals incorporating Ndebele-referenced geometric systems, structured interviews with fifteen mural artists, and documentary review of artist statements and social media posts. Visual analysis examined geometric form fidelity, colour palette adaptation, compositional integration with Nigerian iconographic elements, and functional context of application. Results showed that Ndebele-inspired geometry is most commonly used in commercial interior decoration and school mural contexts, with geometric abstraction serving as a signifier of Pan-African aesthetic affiliation rather than direct cultural reproduction. Only 33.3 percent of interviewed artists demonstrated knowledge of the specific social and ceremonial functions of Ndebele geometric systems in their source culture. Most artists cited social media as the primary source of visual references. The study concludes that cross-African visual borrowing in Nigerian mural art reflects both creative vibrancy and a need for deeper cultural literacy. Recommendations include African visual arts survey courses in design education and artist exchange programmes connecting Nigerian and South African mural communities.
