A Study of Hausa Slang and Youth Language in Kano Metropolis

Youth language varieties and slang represent dynamic sites of linguistic creativity and social identity construction, particularly in urban contexts where young people develop distinct communicative registers that differentiate them from older generations. This study examines Hausa youth slang and emerging youth language features in Kano Metropolis, documenting lexical innovations and the social functions they serve. A sociolinguistic descriptive design was employed, collecting data from 220 youth respondents between the ages of 15 and 28 through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Participant observation in youth gathering spaces including markets, mosques, tertiary institution campuses, and social media groups supplemented survey data. A corpus of 350 slang terms and novel expressions was assembled, classified by source language, semantic domain, morphological structure, and social function. Findings reveal a vibrant youth language ecosystem in Kano drawing on Hausa phonological patterns but incorporating vocabulary from English, Yoruba, and urban Nigerian popular culture, with music and social media serving as primary vectors for slang diffusion. Status marking, in-group solidarity, and humour are the dominant social functions of slang use among sampled youth. Some slang terms are beginning to cross the age divide and enter general usage among adults, suggesting pathways for youth language influence on standard Hausa. The study recommends ongoing documentation of Kano youth language as a window into living Hausa linguistic development and recommends further research on the impact of social media on Hausa youth language spread.
