A Theoretical Framework for Understanding Grief and Mourning in Nigerian Cultural Contexts

📖 VIEW PROJECT ABSTRACT

Existing grief theories, including stage models (Kübler-Ross), task models (Worden), and continuing bonds theory, were developed primarily from Western cultural perspectives on death, loss, and mourning that inadequately account for the communal, spiritual, ancestral, and ritual dimensions of grief processes in Nigerian cultural contexts. This study developed an original theoretical framework for understanding grief and mourning in Nigerian cultural contexts, drawing on empirical research across Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa-Fulani, Tiv, Ijaw, and Kanuri mourning traditions. A constructive theory-building methodology employing systematic review, ethnographic fieldwork, and expert validation was adopted. Systematic review of 44 publications on grief in Nigerian and West African contexts confirmed that existing Western grief models are applied without systematic cultural adaptation in most Nigerian grief counselling contexts. Ethnographic fieldwork at 24 mourning events and 38 in-depth interviews with bereaved individuals and cultural custodians across all six geopolitical zones generated rich data on culturally specific grief expressions, mourning timelines, ritual functions, and continuing ancestral relationship models. The original Nigerian Cultural Grief Framework proposes seven theoretical constructs: communal grief ownership (grief as a community rather than individual process), ritual transformation (mourning rites as grief management infrastructure), continuing ancestral bonds (ongoing relationship with the deceased through ancestral spiritual practices), honour narration (grief expressed through story of the deceased's contribution), gendered mourning labour (culturally assigned roles in mourning expression), temporal elongation (culturally sanctioned extended grief timelines exceeding Western expectations), and spiritual meaning ascription (theologically grounded grief interpretation). Clinical application guidelines for culturally congruent grief counselling are provided for each construct.
