A Theoretical Framework for Understanding the Role of Spirituality in Psychological Healing in Nigerian Communities

Spirituality functions as a central psychological resource in Nigerian communities, operating through mechanisms of meaning-making, communal belonging, moral ordering, and divine agency attribution, yet the theoretical frameworks available to counsellors for understanding and utilising these mechanisms in therapeutic practice are poorly developed for Nigerian contexts. This study developed an original theoretical framework for understanding the role of spirituality in psychological healing in Nigerian communities, drawing on empirical and theoretical work across Christian, Islamic, and indigenous traditional spiritual frameworks. A multi-stage theory-building methodology was employed: systematic review of spirituality and mental health in Nigerian and sub-Saharan African scholarship (74 publications from 2015 to 2024); ethnographic research at 18 spiritual community settings (churches, mosques, and traditional healing sites) across all six geopolitical zones; depth interviews with 40 spiritual leaders functioning as informal mental health support providers; and structural analysis of healing mechanisms across spiritual traditions. The ethnographic research documented six shared healing mechanisms across diverse spiritual frameworks: divine alliance (subjective experience of supernatural partnership in suffering), communal witnessing (healing through narrating suffering before a believing community), symbolic transformation (use of ritual to enact internal change), moral accountability (using spiritual obligation to support behaviour change), intercessory intervention (healing through community prayer and spiritual action), and hope transcendence (finding meaning beyond immediate suffering). The original Spiritual Healing Mechanisms Framework (SHMF) specifies clinical integration protocols for each mechanism. Expert review confirmed original theoretical contribution.
