Accessibility of Government Information to Physically Challenged Individuals in Owerri Imo State

This study examined the accessibility of government information to physically challenged individuals in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, South East Nigeria. The right to information is a fundamental democratic right, and yet persons with physical disabilities frequently encounter barriers that prevent them from accessing publicly available government documents and services. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from 120 physically challenged individuals and government information officers using structured questionnaires and personal interviews. The study found that government information centres lacked wheelchair-accessible entrances, did not provide materials in alternative formats such as Braille or large print, and had no audio-description services for visual content. Most respondents indicated relying on family members to access government information on their behalf. The study recommended that government information offices conduct accessibility audits, procure assistive technology tools, and train staff in inclusive information service delivery.
